But it took a long to reach at this stage. Nearly 3000 years of food development took place for the pizza pie to attain its current delightful state nowadays. Though flat breads have been in run for 6000 years, the term “pizziare” began showing in Italian literature’s as far back as 1000 B.C. The term “pizza” itself is known to have invented from an “Old Italian” word meaning “a point,” which later turned into the Italian word “pizziare,” with meaning to pinch, or to pluck.

Tomatoes were first brought to Italy from South America in the year of 1522. At that time, the tomato was supposed to be toxic. Opportunely, the poorer farmers of the area eventually won over their doubts about tomatoes in the 17th century and stated including it in the bread dough, and the first pizzas were made.

Since the popularity of the tomato became extensive, mozzarella cheese was gradually gaining pace. Mozzarella had become available in Italy only after water buffalo were introduced from India in the 7th century, (mozzarella was first made with water buffalo milk). Its acceptance cultivated very slowly until the latter half of the 18th century, but the cheese and tomatoes were not a part of the pizza until 1889.

In the year 1889, an Italian tavern proprietor known as Don Raffaele Esposito created a pizza with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil – ingredients having the hues of the Italian flag. He called it the Margherita Pizza, after the Queen of Italy, Margherita Teresa Giovanni. Therefore, modern-day tomato-and-cheese pizza came into action.
