In the year 1889, an Italian tavern proprietor known as Don Raffaele Esposito created a pizza with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil – ingredients having the hues of the Italian flag. He called it the Margherita Pizza, after the Queen of Italy, Margherita Teresa Giovanni. Therefore, modern-day tomato-and-cheese pizza came into action.
